History

Ancient Lebena

Lentas stands on the site of the ancient city of Levin, an important port and sacred site during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Lebena was a major center for the worship of Asclepius, the god of healing, and Hygieia, the goddess of health. The ruins of the Asclepieion, a temple dedicated to Asclepius, can still be seen in Lentas today. Excavations in the area have also revealed evidence of a Protominoan settlement dating back to 2500-1900 BC, suggesting a long and rich history of human activity in the area.

Etymology

The name “Lentas” is believed to be pre-Hellenic in origin, possibly derived from the Phoenician word “Lavi,” meaning “lion,” or from the ancient pre-Hellenic word “Levynthos.” According to mythology, one of the lions that pulled the chariot of Rhea, the mother of Zeus, turned to stone at this location, giving the place its name. Another theory suggests that the name is linked to the nearby Liontari (Lion) cape, which resembles a lion’s head when viewed from certain angles.
