Maridati Beach: A Tranquil Retreat in Eastern Crete

Maridati Beach, situated approximately 21 kilometers east of Sitia, is a secluded haven along Crete’s eastern coastline. Accessible via a well-maintained dirt road, this beach offers a serene escape from the more bustling tourist areas.

The shoreline, composed of fine pebbles and sand, is framed by striking red rock formations. A unique feature of Maridati is its adjacency to a coastal wetland, a year-round brackish water habitat sustained by a confluence of underground and surface waters, as well as the sea. The wetland’s vegetation is dominated by reeds, with surrounding areas featuring non-native reeds and planted tamarisk trees that provide shade for beachgoers. Migratory birds also utilize the wetland as a resting point during their long journeys.

The wetland, spanning two stremmas (approximately half an acre), is part of the Special Conservation Zone “Northeast End of Crete, Dionysades, Elasa, and Kavos Sidero Peninsula, Akra Mavrovouni, Vai, Akra Plaka, and Marine Zone” and the Special Protection Zone “Northeast End of Crete.”

While Maridati Beach offers a secluded experience, a large tavern with rental rooms is conveniently located a short distance up the dirt road, catering to visitors’ needs.
