Azokeramos (Αζοκέραμος) is a small village located in the eastern part of Lasithi, Crete, Greece. It is part of the municipality of Sitia, within the municipal unit of Itanos and the community of Zakros.
Location
Azokeramos is situated in a semi-mountainous area, on the northern slopes of Mount Traostalos (Τραόσταλος), at an altitude of approximately 230 meters (755 feet). It is located on the provincial road connecting Ziros (Ζίρος) and Palekastro (Παλαικάστρο). The village is about 94 kilometers (58 miles) southeast of Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος), the capital of Lasithi.
History
Azokeramos was recognized as a settlement in 1925 and was initially part of the Zakros community. In 1997, it was integrated into the municipality of Itanos and later, in 2010, became part of the municipality of Sitia.
Geography and Nature
Mount Traostalos, near Azokeramos, is a rugged and relatively inaccessible area. It is mainly used by shepherds for grazing their flocks. A relatively new dirt road connects Azokeramos to the summit of the mountain, offering panoramic views of the Zakros region, the Xerokampos area, and the small settlements near Palekastro. The Traostalos peak is about 520 meters (1706 feet) high.
The region is characterized by a fertile valley surrounded by high mountains. The valley is filled with olive trees, creating a picturesque landscape.
Culture and Traditions
Religious Sites: Azokeramos has several churches, reflecting the traditional Orthodox Christian culture of Crete. Notable churches include:
- Agios Ioannis (Saint John): A Byzantine church located at the entrance of the village.
- A large cross-shaped church with a bell tower and cypress trees.
- A small church consisting of two buildings.
Local Architecture: The village features many old stone houses, some of which are in a state of disrepair due to abandonment. This traditional architecture is indicative of the region’s history and rural lifestyle.
