Crete’s Captivating Red Beach

Kokkini Ammos, or Red Beach, is situated 68 kilometers southwest of Heraklion and a mere 800 meters south of the renowned Matala, in the Moudia region. To reach this secluded beach, follow the signs and hike along a trail that begins north of Matala and traverses Kastri hill, which separates Matala from Kokkini Ammos. The initial part of the trail involves some rock scrambling, followed by a steep descent towards the beach, but nothing overly challenging. After a 15-25 minute walk from Matala, the magnificent Red Beach comes into view from above. If hiking isn’t your preference, you can also take a boat from Matala harbor.

A Natural Masterpiece

This secluded beach is truly stunning, but it’s exposed to the westerly winds that often blow in the area. Its defining feature, as its name suggests, is the soft, brick-red sand derived from the reddish soil of the region. The sea takes on a mesmerizing turquoise hue due to the sand, setting it apart from other beaches on Crete. The beach isn’t particularly organized, but there are umbrellas and a small cantina (which may not always be open) where you can get basic supplies.

A Haven for Free Spirits

Kokkini Ammos was a favorite destination for hippies during the 60s and 70s when Matala gained international fame. Since then, many enthusiasts continue to visit the beach, which remains a popular spot for nudists (especially the northern part). It has even been voted one of the best nudist beaches in the world. The northern section is protected by a rocky limestone formation, reminiscent of the famous Matala rock but without the carved caves. There, you’ll find many sculpted stones depicting beautiful Minoan and Egyptian sea figures. These sculptures aren’t ancient; they were carved by a romantic Belgian named Gerard, a longtime Matala enthusiast, and have become an integral part of the beach.

Preparation is Key

While the beach offers a captivating experience, it’s important to be prepared. Due to its secluded nature, Kokkini Ammos lacks extensive amenities. Even if the cantina is open, it’s best to bring your own supplies, including plenty of water and sun protection. The walk to the beach, while scenic, can be tiring, so ensure you’re adequately hydrated and equipped for the journey.
