Audacious Escape Begins

Immediately following the abduction, Moss drove the General’s car with Leigh Fermor impersonating Kreipe (wearing his cap) in the front seat. They audaciously drove through 22 German checkpoints in and around Heraklion, relying on the sentries’ deference to the General’s vehicle and reputation for impatience. The car was later abandoned near Heliana or the coast, with misleading evidence planted, and the group began their trek into the Psiloritis mountains towards Anogeia.
