Tsoutsouros south Heraklion Crete

Tsoutsouros, deriving its name from the Venetian word “Zuzzuro” meaning harbor, is a coastal settlement located 63 kilometers south of Heraklion, at the exit of the imposing gorges of Mitris and Tsoutsouras. Built on the site of the ancient city of Inatos, it served as the port for Priansos. The two visually connected settlements of Pera Tsoutsouros and Tsoutsouros form a unified complex serving as the southern port for the residents of Arkalohori.

Tranquil Haven and Natural Beauty

The village offers a serene setting for family vacations. A small harbor fronts the village, flanked by two large, sheltered bays stretching 2 kilometers, with coarse sand and clear waters. The beach, partially organized with umbrellas and shaded by tamarisk trees, is a great starting point for exploring nearby beaches. For solitude, one can venture east to Limniara, with its rocky formations and small ponds. A sea cave known as Pourgonero is also found in Limniara.

A Blend of Interests

Tsoutsouros appeals to diverse interests, combining the allure of the sea, entertainment, archaeological sites, and local myths and legends. Although appearing as one, the village is administratively divided into Tsoutsouros and Pera Tsoutsouros. The former has 93 residents, while the latter has 23, according to the 2011 census. The population swells during summer as the village has become a popular resort.
