It is situated in the Thrypti mountains, above the Ha Gorge, amidst the forested slopes of Afentis Christos peak. The settlement of Salonikia, which belongs to the Community of Kavousi, is located a short distance away. Thrypti is 11 kilometers by road (8 kilometers via a trail) from Epano Chorio, 16 kilometers by road (5 kilometers via a trail) from Kavousi, 7 kilometers from Oreino, and 6 kilometers from Agios Ioannis.
Geography
Thrypti is located in the eastern part of Crete, nestled in the Thrypti mountain range. The village is known for its stunning natural environment, with lush vegetation, including vineyards and orchards. The surrounding area is characterized by a unique pine forest, one of the few remaining remnants of the forests that once covered much of eastern Crete. The area is also home to the impressive Ha Gorge, one of the most remarkable gorges in Greece.
History
Thrypti has a long history, dating back to ancient times. The area was inhabited during the Minoan period, and there is evidence of ancient settlements in the vicinity. The village itself is believed to have been founded during the Byzantine period.
Landmarks
- Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos and Agios Ioannis Prodromos: Located in the center of Thrypti, this church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) and Saint John the Baptist.
- Church of Timios Stavros: Situated on the summit of Afentis Christos, the highest peak in the Thrypti mountains, this church celebrates its feast day on September 14th.
- Church of Agia Anna: Located two kilometers before Thrypti, amidst the pine forest and above the Ha Gorge, this Byzantine church is dedicated to Saint Anna.
Economy
The few remaining inhabitants of Thrypti are engaged in viticulture and animal husbandry. However, most of the former residents have left the village and settled in the towns of Ierapetra or the Kavousi area. Many of the houses in Thrypti are “magatzes,” which are simple lodgings used for accommodation during the summer agricultural work.
