History

The current settlement is believed to be located on the site of the ancient Pyranthos, dating back to the Minoan era. The etymology of Pyranthos is “flower of fire,” derived from the high temperatures experienced during summers in the southern region of the hinterland. Despite these conditions, the land remains cultivable, hence the term “flower” is used to signify its resilience. The village witnessed a significant influx of refugees following the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Culture and Traditions

Pyrathi has two churches: the church of Panagia, located in the village square, and the church of Agioi Anargyroi (Saints Cosmas and Damian), whose feast days are celebrated on July 1st and November 1st, respectively.

Family and Social Life

The village square hosts a tavern offering traditional Cretan cuisine. During the summer, the Pyrathi Cultural and Beautification Association organizes festivals, including the “Raisin Festival,” celebrating the village’s historical production of high-quality raisins.

Natural Environment

A section of the Anapodaris River flows through the village, forming a wetland habitat for endemic species. The views of Kofinas mountain to the south and Pyrathiani Kefala to the north contribute to the area’s scenic beauty.
