Kissamos, situated on the western coast of Crete, is a town steeped in history. Known for its agricultural prowess, particularly its renowned olive oil and wine, Kissamos has managed to retain its authentic character despite the growth of tourism.

A Brief History

The history of Kissamos stretches back to ancient times. It began as the port for the powerful inland city of Polyrrhenia, but it was under Roman rule that Kissamos truly flourished, growing into an independent city with luxurious villas, impressive mosaics, and a bustling harbour. This golden age ended abruptly in 365 CE when a cataclysmic earthquake and massive tectonic uplift destroyed the city and permanently raised the coastline by several meters.

Despite the devastation, the site remained inhabited. During Venetian rule, a large fortress, “Castel Chissamo,” was built, which gave the town its enduring name, Kastelli. The town continued to be a strategic point during the Ottoman era and suffered damage in World War II. In 1969, it was officially renamed Kissamos, reclaiming its ancient identity.

Economy and Modern Significance

The economy of Kissamos is primarily based on agriculture and tourism. The region is famous for its wine, olive oil, and other agricultural products. Tourism has also become a significant contributor to the local economy, with Kissamos serving as a popular destination for those seeking a more authentic Cretan experience. The town boasts several Blue Flag beaches, including “Mavros Molos,” “Pachia Ammos” (Falassarna), and “Elafonisi,” highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability and quality. 🏖️
