The Church of the Holy Apostles is a 15th-16th century Byzantine church located on the slopes of Tholoi hill, near the village of Alagni in Crete, Greece. The church is a double-aisled structure, with each aisle dedicated to a different saint: one to Apostle Peter and the other to Apostle Paul. It features the coat of arms of the Venetian Cornaro family, indicating their patronage or association with the church.

Architectural Features

The church is notable for its two arcosolia (arched tombs), one inside and one outside the church. The exterior arcosolium bears an inscription with the date 1614. This suggests that the church may have served as a burial site for members of the Cornaro family or other prominent individuals. The church’s architecture is typical of the late Byzantine period in Crete, with a simple rectangular plan and a pitched roof.

Historical Context

The church’s location near the Tholoi fortress, a small fort dating back to the 16th-17th century, adds to its historical significance. During the Venetian period (13th-17th century), Crete was an important outpost for Venice, and many fortifications were built to protect the island from Ottoman attacks. The church and the fortress likely played a role in the local defense network and community life during this turbulent period.

Current Status

Unfortunately, the Church of the Holy Apostles suffered significant damage during the September 2021 earthquake in Arkalochori. It is currently owned by the Monastery of Sinai but has been left abandoned and neglected. The surrounding land has been encroached upon by farmers and livestock breeders, further contributing to the site’s deterioration.

Despite its current state, the church remains an important historical monument. The presence of the Cornaro family coat of arms inside the church suggests a link to this influential Venetian family, offering potential for further research into the church’s history and patronage. The church’s location near the Tholoi fortress also provides valuable insights into the defense network and social dynamics of the area during the Venetian period.
