Agiofarago Gorge and Beach: Hiking or Boating Adventure
Agiofarago, which means Saints’ Gorge in Greek, offers a unique experience in South Crete.
- Location: The gorge is located about 80km south of Heraklion and ends at the beautiful beach with the same name.
- Gorge Hike: It is a rather easy 1.5 kilometer hike, that can take around 30 minutes walk.
- Trail Features: The hike offers stunning views of steep cliffs riddled with caves once used by hermits. You might even see some hermit monks still residing there! On the way, you’ll find the 13th-century chapel of Agios Antonios.
- Beach Access: You can either hike the gorge or take a boat from nearby towns like Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos, or Kali Limenes.
- Beach Description: The beach boasts fine pebbles, clear blue water, and a natural rocky arch for swimming beneath. Be aware that naturism is not recommended here due to the religious significance of the area.
- Additional Activities: The area is a popular training ground for rock climbing. After your swim, consider climbing the eastern cliffs for breathtaking views. There’s also a hidden saltwater lake called Vourvoulitis nearby but be warned that descending might be dangerous.
- Parking: Be warned against parking under the shade of a tree due to wild goats that may get on the car to reach the tree and damage it.
Tips:
- Bring water and snacks, as there are no shops near the beach.
- Wear sturdy shoes for the hike.
- Take all your rubbish with you when you leave!
No matter how you choose to get there, Agiofarago promises a beautiful natural wonder and a glimpse into Crete’s religious history.
