Afrati, Viannos

Afrati (Αφρατί) is a traditional village in the Viannos municipality of Heraklion regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It is located approximately 45 km southeast of Heraklion city, at an altitude of 480 meters. The village is known for its traditional architecture, with stone houses, courtyards, and narrow alleyways. The primary occupations of the residents are olive cultivation and viticulture.

Etymology

There are several theories regarding the origin of the village’s name. One suggestion is that it derives from the Greek word “aphros,” meaning foam, referring to the frothy appearance of the soil in the area. Another theory links the name to the ancient city of Arcadia, which was located nearby, and the worship of the goddess Aphrodite. A third possibility is that it comes from the Latin word “frate,” meaning monk, indicating a potential monastic presence in the past.

History

The area around Afrati has been inhabited since ancient times. An ancient city named Arcadia or Arcadians existed on a nearby hill, Prophitis Ilias. This city was independent and even minted its own coins. During the early Christian period, it became the seat of a bishop. Archaeological excavations in the area have unearthed ancient houses and a necropolis dating back to the 7th, 8th, and 9th centuries BC. An ancient oinochoe (wine jug) from the Orientalizing period (7th century BC) has also been discovered in Afrati.

The village itself is not mentioned in any Venetian or Turkish documents before the 19th century. It first appears in the Turkish census of 1881 under the name “Frati.”
