Abas Waterfall: A Natural Wonder in Crete’s Rugged South

Located 53 kilometers south of Heraklion, in the heart of Crete’s Asterousia Mountains, the Abas Waterfall is a dramatic natural formation. The Mousoulis stream, which flows during the winter months, originates from the springs of the Paranymfoi and Amygdalos plateau at an altitude of approximately 700 meters. Its smooth journey is abruptly interrupted by the rocky fault of Asterousia, resulting in the spectacular 145-meter Abas Waterfall.

A Waterfall of Significance

The Abas Waterfall holds the distinction of being the second-tallest waterfall in Greece in terms of vertical drop, surpassed only by the Mastoras Waterfall in the Ha Gorge. Its impressive height and the surrounding rugged landscape create a captivating scene for visitors.

Accessing the Waterfall

A road leading to the waterfall can be reached by following a sign after the village of Paranymfoi on the way to Treis Ekklisies. This road offers a vantage point to admire the waterfall’s grandeur from above.

The Gorge and Its Wildlife

The gorge formed by the waterfall continues its descent towards the sea, featuring additional smaller waterfalls along its course. While navigating the gorge requires technical expertise and equipment, experienced canyoners can complete the descent in approximately seven hours. The gorge boasts 21 rappels, with the highest measuring 45 meters.

The cliffs surrounding the Abas Waterfall and gorge are home to the largest island population of birds of prey in Europe. To avoid disturbing their breeding season, it is recommended to refrain from visiting during the winter months.

A Note of Caution

Visitors with a fear of heights are advised to enjoy the waterfall’s beauty from a safe distance, as the path alongside the cliff lacks protective barriers and poses a risk of accidents.
