Venetian Villas in Veneto and Crete: Past and Present

October 3 - October 6

A series of events exploring the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Venetian villas in Crete and Veneto, Italy, is being organized by the Municipality of Sitia in collaboration with “pilΟiko a.m.k.e.” and under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. Taking place in and around the historic Venetian villa “De Mezzo” in the abandoned settlement of Etia, within the Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark, this initiative aims to shed new light on the enduring historical ties between the two regions through a scientific symposium, a photographic exhibition, and cultural performances.

The core of the event is a scientific symposium that brings together architects, archaeologists, university professors, and researchers from both Greece and Italy. They will delve into the architectural legacy of Venetian villas, comparing structures in Veneto with those in Crete, and discussing historical construction techniques alongside modern restoration methods. The event seeks to highlight this shared architectural heritage as a vital resource for sustainable tourism and economic development, while also revitalizing the local communities of the Ziros plateau by involving them in a high-caliber cultural experience. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with experts, explore the beautifully restored “De Mezzo” villa, and appreciate the deep historical connections that have shaped the landscape and culture of eastern Crete. The events are open to professionals, students in related fields, and the general public, encouraging participation from all age groups and social backgrounds.

In addition to the scholarly discussions, the program is enriched with a photographic exhibition showcasing Venetian villas in both regions, offering a contemporary visual reading of these historic structures. The cultural aspect is further enhanced with musical and literary performances that weave together Cretan Renaissance rhythms, the epic poem “Erotokritos,” and the timeless love story of “Romeo and Juliet,” creating a vibrant dialogue between the two cultures.
