The Circle of Culture Festival: From Byzantium to the Venetian Era

The Municipality of Minoa Pediada, in collaboration with local cultural associations and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, presents the 2nd thematic festival, “The Circle of Culture.” This year’s event focuses on the rich historical period from the Byzantine to the Venetian era within the municipality. Running from August 4th to August 24th, 2025, the festival offers residents and visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the area’s profound cultural heritage through a series of engaging activities.
The festival’s diverse program is designed to illuminate the historical and cultural wealth of the Minoa Pediada region. Participants can experience guided tours of significant Byzantine churches and monasteries led by knowledgeable archaeologists, providing insights into the art and architecture of the period. The events are further enriched with talks by scientific experts on local history and traditions. The program also features cultural performances, including music, shadow theatre, and a special tribute to the epic poem “Erotokritos.” A significant aspect of the festival is its connection to local crafts and gastronomy, with presentations on the traditional art of weaving, exhibitions of Byzantine-era ceramics, and interactive workshops on Byzantine and monastic cuisine, highlighting local products such as olive oil, cheese, honey, and wine.
