The Skinakas Observatory has released its schedule for the “Summer Public Evenings” for 2025. As part of its effort to bring the public closer to science and technology, the observatory offers free visits on select dates each year. These events provide a unique opportunity for the public to get a firsthand look at the observatory’s operations, learn about the latest breakthroughs in astrophysics, and, weather permitting, observe celestial objects through its $1.3$m telescope.

The open evenings are scheduled near the first quarter of the moon each month for optimal viewing conditions. The public should be aware that construction for the new “Astroscholeio” (Astro-school) is planned for the summer. Since all events are weather-dependent, it is highly recommended to check the official Skinakas Observatory website or the Institute of Astrophysics Facebook page for any potential changes before visiting.

During these evenings, visitors will have the opportunity to:

• Observe the Sun through a portable solar telescope until just before sunset.
• Attend a presentation on the history of the observatory and its discoveries (usually until 20:30).
• Tour the dome of the $1.3$m telescope. After dark (around 21:00), visitors can observe celestial objects like the Moon through a special camera.
• Explore more celestial wonders with the help of the University of Crete’s Student Astronomy Group, who will be present with their portable telescope.

Important Information for Visitors

• Dress Code: Temperatures at the high altitude of the observatory can be low, even in summer. Visitors are advised to dress warmly.
• Facility Limitations: Visitors should note that Skinakas Observatory is a research facility. It does not have public restrooms or extensive seating. The spaces are confined and not intended for long stays. On busy nights, the wait time for telescope viewing can exceed one hour. For these reasons, visits are not recommended for young children or individuals with mobility issues on crowded evenings.
• Access & Parking: The final 5 km of the road to the observatory is very narrow and presents a serious risk of accidents. Drivers must exercise extreme caution. Due to the narrow road and limited parking, access by tour buses is not possible during public open evenings.
• Special Notice for July 4th: Due to asphalting works on the access road, the open evening on Friday, July 4th, will run on a delayed schedule from 20:00 to 23:00, as the road will be inaccessible earlier. The road will still be in a construction state after 20:00, with machinery present, requiring extreme caution from drivers.
