Architectural Heritage of Ancient Polyrrhenia

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania is organizing a thematic guided tour at the archaeological site of Polyrrhenia, focusing on “Architectural Heritage – Bridging the past with the future.” This event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage and the 40th anniversary of the Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe, highlighting the importance of preserving these historical assets for future generations.
The guided tour will delve into the impressive ancient water supply system and the residences of the powerful city-state of Polyrrhenia. Participants will have the opportunity to explore functional structures that have seen continuous use throughout the centuries. The architectural legacy of Polyrrhenia is not merely a relic of the past; it forms a fundamental element of the cultural identity of the modern, traditional settlement that bears the same name. Through this experience, visitors will discover the infrastructure that supported life in the ancient city, understand its integration into the urban fabric, and appreciate its value as an inseparable part of the area’s identity. The goal is to showcase the past and to sensitize the public to the need for the protection and preservation of this invaluable cultural heritage.
