12th Shepherd and Cheese Festival in Zoniana, 2025

The 12th annual Shepherd and Cheese Festival, organized by the community of Zoniana in collaboration with the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Mylopotamos, returns to celebrate the deep-rooted traditions of animal husbandry and cheese-making in this rural area. This vibrant event has become a significant cultural gathering, attracting thousands of visitors each year to honor the rich heritage and daily life of the region’s shepherds and farmers.
The festival serves as a tribute to the people of Zoniana, one of Greece’s most active livestock farming communities, celebrating the labour and dedication required to produce high-quality local products. It offers a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with the authentic traditions, nature, and flavours of the Cretan countryside. The day’s activities are centered around the iconic local product, kefalotyri cheese, and include the presentation and cutting of the world’s largest kefalotyri. Participants can also explore local tastes with dishes prepared by the women of the village, enjoy performances by musicians from Zoniana, and watch traditional Cretan dancing. The event will also feature a presentation of books by the local folklorist, Manolis Parasiris (Manoloukos).
For those seeking an authentic experience steeped in Cretan culture and traditional flavours, the festival in Zoniana on August 10th offers a genuine connection to the island’s heritage.
