Roman Tombs of Kamilari
Located near the village of Kamilari in southern Crete, the Roman Tombs offer a glimpse into the island’s history during the Roman period. Discovered in 2010 following an attempted illegal excavation, the tombs are situated at the foot of Evgora Hill, close to Metochi Kamiliariou. The area was known locally as “Xospilios,” a name possibly derived from the Greek word for cave (“spilaio”), as locals believed the area to be hollow due to the muffled sounds heard when animals passed over it.
