Designated a “Monumental Tree” by the Association of Olive Municipalities of Crete (SEDIK), the ancient olive tree of Paliamas near Moroni stands as a testament to time and resilience. Its unique aesthetic, characterized by its impressive trunk size and intricate relief, sets it apart in the landscape.
The tree, located in the Trypiti area near the old settlement of Paliamas belongs to the ‘Chondrolia’ variety grafted onto a wild olive rootstock. As of 2008, it is under the ownership of Thomas Ximerakis.
A striking feature of this olive tree is the large cavity within its trunk, capable of accommodating 2-3 people. This unique formation adds to the tree’s visual appeal and historical significance.
