Nisi (Νησί – Islans) is an uninhabited settlement in Crete, located near the administrative border between the Regional Unit of Rethymno and the Regional Unit of Chania. It is situated in the area of Argyroupoli, on the Nisiiani mountain, which separates the “Kollita Gorges” of Viladendrou (or Velonado) and Moundriano. The settlement was officially abolished in 1961 and administratively merged with the settlement of Kato Poros.
History
The history of the settlement may extend back to the Byzantine period. The first written record of Nisi appears in 1583 in a census by Kastrofylakas, which listed 14 inhabitants. The settlement was first officially recognized in modern Greek state records in 1925 when it was annexed to the community of Argyroupoli. Its last appearance in a census was in 1951, after which it was abandoned.
Location and Architecture
The ruins of Nisi are found on a hill with kermes oaks, along the E4 European long-distance path that connects the villages of Alones and Agios Konstantinos. The remains of the settlement include well-constructed houses with numerous arches and skillfully carved doorways and windows.
Within the abandoned settlement is the church of Agios Georgios (Saint George). A short distance away lies the church of Panagia i Nisiani (Virgin Mary of Nisi). The area is a known destination for hiking.
