Festival of Birds at Lake Agia

October 5 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Vamos Center for Environmental Education and Sustainable Development (KEPEA) and the Ecological Initiative of Chania present the “Festival of Birds,” a celebration of the autumn bird migration at the significant wetland of Lake Agia in Chania. This local event is part of the broader European Birdwatch, an international initiative coordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Ornithological Society. It offers an opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages to witness and learn about the incredible journey of millions of birds as they travel to their wintering grounds.

The primary goal of the festival is to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting migratory birds and their habitats, including their breeding grounds, migratory routes, and wintering locations. Greece, and particularly Crete, serves as a crucial stopover for many species, making Lake Agia an ideal location for observation. Participants can look forward to a morning dedicated to the world of birds, with activities designed to be both educational and engaging. The event will feature guided bird watching with expert assistance, a tour of the lake’s unique environment, and a special workshop for younger attendees, fostering an early appreciation for the natural world.

This event offers a wonderful connection to the environmental heritage of the Chania region, highlighting Lake Agia as a vital ecosystem for local and migratory wildlife.
