August Full Moon: A Musical Evening at Ancient Gortyna

While the successful organization of cultural events often depends on the timely and clear dissemination of information to the public, details for this year’s full moon celebration at Gortyna have been notably sparse. Nevertheless, a musical evening is planned to take place within one of Crete’s most historically significant archaeological sites.
The Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, in a joint effort with the Network of Messara Associations, the Municipality of Gortyna, and the Region of Crete, presents an event dedicated to the August Full Moon. The evening is set to feature a musical tribute with pieces from some of Greece’s greatest composers. This performance will unfold in the historic expanse of Ancient Gortyna, the celebrated Greco-Roman capital of Crete. The site, renowned for the monumental Law Code of Gortyn and its impressive Odeon and Praetorium, offers a deeply resonant setting, connecting today’s cultural expressions with millennia of history.
As part of the nationwide celebration, the archaeological site itself will officially be open to the public with free admission on the evening of the full moon, providing a wonderful opportunity to wander through the ancient city under the stars.
