The operational phase began on February 4, 1944, when Major Patrick Leigh Fermor successfully parachuted onto the Katharo plateau in Crete. However, the aircraft carrying Captain W. Stanley Moss and Cretan agents Georgios Tyrakis and Emmanouil Paterakis was forced to turn back to Egypt due to adverse weather conditions, delaying the arrival of the full abduction team. Leigh Fermor remained on the island, making contact with local resistance groups while awaiting the rest of his team.
