Immerse yourself in the captivating world of traditional Cretan weaving at our upcoming workshop in the picturesque village of Margarites. Under the expert guidance of master weaver Manolis Kouratoras, you’ll delve into the art of loom weaving, learning to create intricate designs and patterns. Additionally, textile designer Clarissa Joy Holmes will lead a two-day introduction to plant-based dyes and the eco-printing technique, allowing you to explore the natural beauty of colors derived from local flora.
Workshop Highlights:
- Daily Loom Weaving Sessions: Each day from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Mr. Kouratoras will guide you through the fundamentals of loom weaving, teaching you how to create basic and complex patterns, including traditional Cretan designs. You’ll gain hands-on experience in analyzing fabric structures, preparing warps, threading looms, and understanding various weaving techniques.
- Plant-Based Dyes and Eco-Printing: On Saturday, October 5th, and Sunday, October 6th, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Ms. Holmes will introduce you to the world of natural dyes. You’ll learn about local plants used for dyeing, explore pigments from other regions, and discover the art of eco-printing, creating unique designs on fabric using leaves and flowers.
- Practice Time: Every morning between October 5th and 11th, the workshop looms will be available for participants to practice their newly acquired skills and experiment with different designs.
- Accommodation: A limited number of participants can enjoy complimentary accommodation at the Monastery of Sotiros Christos and Agios Gedeon. Alternatively, various charming guesthouses and apartments are available for booking in Margarites.
Workshop Fee and Registration:
The workshop fee is 120 euros. To secure your spot, a 50 euro deposit is required. Please complete the registration form and transfer the deposit to the Rodakas account (GR60 0171 3750 0063 7516 4234 881, AMKE RODAKAS Piraeus).
