Goudouras, Siteia

Goudouras (Γούδουρας) is a coastal settlement in southeastern Crete, belonging to the municipality of Sitia. It is known as a fishing village, with its location on the Libyan Sea providing an abundance of fresh seafood. The settlement is located east of Makry Gialos and offers beautiful natural surroundings, with its beaches and the rugged Sitia mountains in the background. In addition to fishing and tourism, the extensive cultivation of early vegetables and greenhouse products are an important source of income for the inhabitants.

Goudouras consists of two joined settlements, Asprolithos in the west and Goudouras in the east. The name comes from Cape Goudouras, the ancient “Erythraion”, near the edge of which it is built. The name Goudouras in turn comes from the plant agouduros (Hypericum triquetrifolium), which was abundant in the area and used as a substrate for drying fruits (eg figs, raisins). The very warm climate of the area favors the cultivation of olives and vegetables in greenhouses, which unfortunately have flooded the plain, altering the natural beauty of the area.

The village has a mild tourist development, which makes it a very quiet destination even in August. In front of the coastal road unfolds a large beach with pebbles and clear cool waters, which has not been utilized at all, although there are some places with umbrellas and some taverns nearby. After swimming, you can enjoy local fish in the famous taverns of the area.

In Goudouras you will see the stone church of the Ascension, next to the exit of the stream that carries the waters from the inaccessible gorge of Agios Antonios and the gorge of Goudouras. From the village you can make an excursion to the picturesque settlement of Agia Triada, 8 km further north and enjoy the magic of the wild Cretan landscape and the large olive groves. Then you can head to Ziros and Xerokambos with its emerald beaches.
