Stavromenos (Σταυρωμένος) is a village and the seat of the homonymous community in the municipality of Sitia in the Lasithi regional unit in eastern Crete. It is located at an altitude of 227 meters and is about 9 kilometers south of Sitia.
History
In 1925, Stavromenos was annexed to the community of Sitia. In 1933, it was detached from the community of Sitia and became the seat of the newly established community of Stavromenos.
Geography
Stavromenos is located 8 kilometers from Sitia, at an altitude of 110 meters. It is located in a green area with natural springs. The village is surrounded by several small settlements, including Arniko, Kato Drys, and Zou. The area is known for its natural beauty and attracts nature lovers.
Archaeological Findings
In Sfakia, a Minoan tomb was excavated, and in Patela, a tomb from the Geometric period was found. Near the village, traces of a building were found, which may have been a peak sanctuary.
