Potential Sections of Ancient Elyros Theater Identified on Land Acquired by Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos

March 28, 2025

The Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos has taken a significant step towards uncovering more of the region’s rich past by purchasing a parcel of land within the designated archaeological zone of ancient Elyros, located in the Municipal Community of Rodovani.

Initial inspection of the newly acquired property by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania has identified remnants of ancient structures. Preliminary assessments by the archaeological service strongly suggest these structures are part of the ancient theater of Elyros, a historically significant city in Western Crete.

The Municipality is actively collaborating with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, under the leadership of its Head, Ms. Eleni Papadopoulou, and in coordination with Ms. Angeliki Tsingou, the archaeologist responsible for the Elyros area. Discussions are underway to determine the appropriate legal process for transferring the land parcel to the Ephorate. This crucial step will facilitate formal archaeological excavation and the subsequent conservation and promotion (ανάδειξη) of this important discovery.

This initiative underscores the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to archaeological research and heritage preservation. Following a previous allocation of €60,000 for excavations at ancient Lissos, the Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos has earmarked €35,000 in its current budget specifically to finance the commencement of new excavation work at Elyros. This funding provides the necessary impetus to begin uncovering the site.

Historical Context:

Ancient Elyros, situated on Kefala hill near modern Rodovani, was a prominent urban center in southwestern Crete from at least the 4th century BC through Late Antiquity, flourishing particularly during the Roman era. Historical sources and archaeological evidence indicate it was a major city, a leading member of the 3rd century BC Oreioi League, possessing fortifications, an aqueduct, cisterns, and a theater. The city controlled the important ports of Lissos and Syia and was known for its autonomy, even minting its own coinage.

Through targeted actions like the acquisition of this land and the allocation of funds, the Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos aims to actively contribute to the research and protection of the region’s invaluable historical legacy. These efforts are expected to enhance the understanding of ancient Elyros and boost cultural tourism by attracting visitors interested in Crete’s significant archaeological sites and history.
